Existe un viejo relato popular irlandés que habla de Jack , un perezoso pero astuto granjero que usó una cruz para atrapar al Diablo.
-- There is an old Irish folk tale that speaks of Jack, a lazy but shrewd farmer who used a cross to trap the Devil.
Jack estaba siendo perseguido por algunos aldeanos a quienes había robado cuando se encontró con el Diablo, quien le dijo que había llegado el momento de su muerte.
Sin embargo, el ladrón retrasó su suerte tentando al Diablo a castigar a los aldeanos que lo perseguían alegando que eran fieles a Dios.
Jack le dijo al Diablo que se convirtiera en una moneda con la cual pagaría por los bienes robados; luego, cuando la moneda/Diablo desapareciera misteriosamente, los aldeanos pelearían entre sí para averiguar quién se la ha robado.
--Jack was being chased by some villagers who had stolen when he met the Devil, who told him that now was the time of his death. However, the thief delayed his lucky devil tempting to punish the villagers chasing him claiming they were faithful to God. Jack told the Devil to turn into a coin with which to pay for the stolen goods, then, when the coin / Devil disappeared mysteriously, the villagers would fight each other to find out who stole it.
El Diablo accedió a la propuesta: se convirtió en una moneda de plata y saltó al saco que Jack llevaba, solo para encontrarse junto a una cruz que el ladrón había también robado en la aldea.

After a while Jack dies, like any other living thing. Of course, his life had been too sinful to be able to enter Heaven, however, the Devil had promised not to take his soul, and this was also out of hell.

Entonces pasó a ser conocido como Jack of the Lantern (“Jack la linterna”), o Jack-o’-Lantern. La linterna de Jack en Irlanda y Escocia era un nabo tallado con la supuesta cara tenebrosa de Jack, que solían colocar en las ventanas para ahuyentar al diablo y a todo espíritu maligno de sus hogares.
