Jack-o'-lantern

-- Today I bring dark and traditional halloween history ...

--Do you know where does the tradition of Halloween pumpkin? Let me tell you.

-- There is an old Irish folk tale that speaks of Jack, a lazy but shrewd farmer who used a cross to trap the Devil.

--Jack was being chased by some villagers who had stolen when he met the Devil, who told him that now was the time of his death. However, the thief delayed his lucky devil tempting to punish the villagers chasing him claiming they were faithful to God. Jack told the Devil to turn into a coin with which to pay for the stolen goods, then, when the coin / Devil disappeared mysteriously, the villagers would fight each other to find out who stole it.

-- The Devil agreed to the proposal became a silver coin and jumped into Jack wore sack, only to find himself next to a cross that the thief had also stolen in the village.

--While Jack closed the bag and the cross stripped the Devil of his powers, and so caught. In both myths, Jack only lets the Devil go when he agrees never to take his soul. After a while Jack dies, like any other living thing. Of course, his life had been too sinful to be able to enter Heaven, however, the Devil had promised not to take his soul, and this was also out of hell.

--Jack now had nowhere to go. He wondered how he could see where he was going, and he did not have any light, and the Devil tossed him, as a joke, an ember that would never cease to burn with the fire of hell.

--Jack cupped one of his turnips (his favorite food), put the ember inside and began to wander aimlessly forever and throughout the world to find a place to finally rest.

-- Then it became known as Jack of the Lantern ("Jack the Lantern"), or Jack-o'-Lantern. Jack's flashlight in Ireland and Scotland was a carved turnip with the alleged dark side of Jack, who used to put in windows to ward off the devil and every evil spirit from their homes.
